Carl W Stern is made of stern stuff. Provoke him, challenge him, taunt him, he remains unperturbed, answering every question with Buddha-like calmness. He won't pretend to have all the answers either - as is the wont of many consultants. Throw some broad generalisations at him and he politely refuses to engage, quoting General MacArthur as saying, "No generalisation is worth a damn, including this one." On pointed questions he offers sharp analytical insights - like why consulting will never die.
Why is the value being offered by the consulting industry questioned every few years?
I hate to sound like a politician here, but there are two separate realities. There is a reality of press that needs to sell papers and there is a reality of clients needing to address issues. These are two completely separate things. Just because there are articles' questioning consulting doesn't mean the CEOs of companies are stupid. CEOs everywhere are among the smartest people I have ever met who will not, in any circumstances, shell out corporate money on stuff that isn't providing value. There is nothing socially enhancing about using consultants. And only things that consultants can do is add value to their company.
